There could be three main issues with the filter:
- critical contamination of the filtering material,
- damage to the filter,
- incorrect installation.
The main source of problems is the human factor (error with the technical characteristics of the filter, incorrect installation, errors when replacing the filter, buying forgery, delayed replacement). There are few exceptions; you can get a defected filter that's why you need to check the condition of the filter from time to time and replace it with the slightest suspicion of a malfunction.
Signs of clogged filter:
- lack of air for combustion of fuel,
- increased consumption and incomplete combustion of fuel due to re-enrichment of the mixture,
- reduction of engine power
- increase of toxicity of exhaust gases,
- malfunction in the mass flow sensor.
If the filter is not replaced when the problems occur, the effects will increase, until the filter ceases to pass the air and this might lead to car start failure.
How to know when to change a filter?
1. Mileage (it is recommended to change the filter mainly after every 10-15 thousand miles. In rural areas, it is necessary to do it more frequently).
2. Reduced engine power and engine run at idle.
3. Spark plugs are blacked out due to the overload of the mixture, which causes contaminated air.
4. Increased consumption of fuel and oil.
5. Visual inspection of the filter - it becomes dirty.
